The Mentalist is a new show on CBS, the pilot episode debuted a couple days ago. It’s about a guy whose observational skills are so sharp that people would assume he’s a psychic if he let them. He used to make money doing John Edward (biggest douche in the universe) style shows, now he works with the police to investigate serious crimes. Apparently there’s a show on the USA network with a similar premise called Psych, but I’m assuming that show is terrible because.. it’s on the USA network. And also its website shows that it’s really wacky. The Mentalist is not wacky. It’s a funny show, but the humor mostly comes from the main character being a dick. Kind of like House. Actually everything I said about House yesterday probably will apply to this show as well. Of course only one episode has aired so far and I could just as easily see this show being softened to appeal to a bigger audience if it doesn’t do well at first (or if the writers get sappy/lazy which is probably more likely).

Episode two was pretty mediocre. I still laughed at a couple of the being-a-dick moments but overall the concept of the show is too stupid and the writing is not good. I doubt I’ll watch any more episodes of this show.

I think you might have that backwards. The Mentalist looks like they took Psych, took out the fun, humor, charming characters, and shot it like another CSI. Psych is a great show. I will agree there isn’t much top-shelf original fare on USA (i don’t watch any of their shows because of the previously mentioned terribleness), but Psych has been able to flourish into great writing, fun stories, and and deeper / more interesting characters this season. You should check out a few episodes on Hulu.com.
Fair enough, I’ll give Psych a fair chance.
This is the worst show ever. Crime shows are getting so bad, that you can tell who did it in the first five minutes. And the crimes themselves are so boring that the ever more complicated sex angles are the only thing left to differentiate them. But the mentalist is especially bad because of that smug bastard. He is just waiting for someone to hit that smirk off of his face. Scince when is snarky such a great thing?
This show could get better if they get better actors, the other cops really suck .and why does Simon wear the same suit all the time. Lets not forget the bad writing,, OMG this show is so bad it makes reality T.V look good
