An Unlikely Combination

Adam gave me the idea of listening to audiobooks a while ago, but I didn’t really have any time/place to listen to them.  I listen to music or radio shows while in the car or wasting time on the internet, and I’m not able to pay a satisfactory amount of attention to something with depth (like an audiobook) at those times.  But also, I’m not going to just sit here doing nothing except listening to a book… I might as well just be reading it.  And reading is for queers, as we all know.

Then recently I decided I felt like playing World of Warcraft again.  I know just a couple weeks ago I was saying Tabula Rasa was good but I played for a few hours and it never really hooked me.  Anyway, the problem with WoW is I’ve already played it for dozens of hours over the years and it requires very minimal brainpower which means it’s kind of boring and I’m just kind of going through the motions.  But then, aha, two activities whose levels of required concentration complement each other perfectly!

I’ve played WoW/listened to the audiobook version of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road for about 5 hours and it’s working out great.  I do kind of feel like listening to an audiobook is cheating yourself out of the real thing but, I guess it’s better than not being exposed to the book at all.  That’s me, always just ever-so-slightly above the average stupid person.

Somehow I missed this post previously. After seeing No Country For Old Men (I saw it again the other day which only made me like the movie more), I’ve been really interested in reading (or listening to, I suppose) some Cormac McCarthy. Maybe I’ll check out, The Road, if you say it’s good.

It’s pretty good. It’s kind of a simple and repetitive story, about halfway through it was like OK I GET IT THEY’RE COLD AND STARVING AND IN DANGER OF BEING KILLED. But it’s still pretty good.

I just started Reading “The Road,” which seems more like your kind of book since its all post apocalyptic/sci fi type stuff. Although that’s just the setting, the story itself is still more about the main characters and their relationship with each other.

Yes I read that book and commented on it right above your post. *puts back of hand on Adam’s forehead to check for debilitating fever*

Wow that’s embarrassing on my part. In explanation, for some reason I thought you were reading (err, listening to) All the Pretty Horses, and that’s what your post was about. At work we got in a copy of The Road and I picked it up and started reading it. Then I remembered you saying that whatever book you were listening to (again, I thought it was All the Pretty Horses) was pretty good but you weren’t completely loving it, so I chimed in with the Road – a book I thought hadn’t been discussed yet. A simple glancing over of the post again would have kept me from making an ass out of myself, but it is far to late for that now.
