Blogging: A Retrospective

Here’s what I do on the weekend for fun!  I look at web sites on the internet, also known as the information superhighway.  In this particular instance I was using StumbleUpon to provide me with random entertainment, and I Stumbled Upon the good old Internet Archive Wayback Machine.  Being the self-centered ass that most people are, I immediately entered my web site address and looked into the scary (recent) history of my blog.  It’s mostly very embarrassing, so please don’t go looking for yourself.  But it was fun seeing some of my old site designs, most of which I still like are quite terrible.

[RIGHT]This is the first design that shows up on the Wayback Machine.  The colors are obviously hideous, but I think I was deliberately trying to go for something nontraditional.  That’s my excuse anyway.  Other than that it’s a pretty unremarkable two-column layout that I use in every site design.  Although I guess after this I moved to the right-side column school of thought.

[LEFT]I don’t really remember this design much, it’s not bad.  I do remember that this was the point at which I switched from some now-defunct web publishing software called Coranto to the still-around-but-not-as-popular MovableType.  And you would think that I must’ve learned my lesson about obnoxious colors, but I quickly decided that theming my blog for the holidays would be appropriate…

[RIGHT]Yeah.. I don’t know what I was thinking.

[LEFT]This design was largely influenced by the flaminglips.com website, and I at least had the decency to admit as much right on the front page.  I still kind of like it, but it could clearly use a few more hours of polish and fine-tuning.  Again with the extreme color choices.

[RIGHT]Now this here is a design I still like a lot.  No clutter, no obnoxious colors, easy to read.  If I was still writing really long text-heavy blog entries I would probably bring back a design very similar to this one.

[LEFT]Which brings us to the current design, which hopefully looks something like this in your browser.  There are a few things about it that bug me but I can’t quite think of how to solve them in the overall design.  I’m basically satisfied with it.. I’ll probably just leave it as it is now, or completely ditch it and start over.  Depends on my mood and how much time I have to kill.

How many do you remember, dear reader?

I actually remember all of those. I also remember the blog you had where you posted pictures and then a color corresponding to each one that was supposed to show your feelings about the picture.
